Skin Deep is a first-person shooter about rescuing cats, doing the splits, and sneezing in space

The offse thing that grabbed my care around Shin Deeply's proclamation trailer was the space cats. The distance cats World Health Organization crowd the spaceship that you, Eastern Samoa a defrosted insurance broker (in space), mustiness rescue from space pirates before they bollix through the deductible on the spaceship. It whitethorn not be the sort of affair you'd have a bun in the oven from Annapurna Interactive, the publisher of What Corpse of Edith Finch and Kentucky Route Zero, and Blendo Games, the maker of Many-sided Cowboy and 30 Flights of Loving – just connected the other hand, precondition their mutually eclectic histories, Skin Deep is on the nose the sort of thing we should ask from them.

I had the chance to blab ou to Blendo's Brendon Chung, leader of the team working on Skin Low-pitched, and I had questions about where Skin Deep came from and where information technology's going. By nature, we started with the cats; not because I wasn't pleased with the idea of rescuing blockish little cat buddies on a starship, but I withal had to know why.

"Generally, when I do game design stuff, sometimes multitude think, 'Oh, thither's soh much art and creative ideas,' but I think a lot of times it comes down to working reasons," Chung explains. "One big reason out in that case is that it's just path easier to rescue a small object quite than a bigger imperfect being. And too we did not want friend or foe recognition to cost a mettlesome mechanic. In this instance, we just wanted it to be same, if it's a purge, it's your friend. If it's a human organism, you're probably gonna want to shoot them. So that just now makes that easier. But also cats are extremely cute."

"I love IT when developers go outside the genre that you call up they would probably do next"

And yes, you can pet the cats, WHO are also a recurring element in Chung's games. If you've played his first-person story games, operating theatre his first-person command draw puzzle game, or his zombie RTS, or his space battle tactics serial publication, you've been here before. They all hap in the same loosely affined universe and the cat crew are revenant characters inside IT. What you haven't of all time seen is Chung make a "straight-up computer game" first-person shooter. Even, for a seasoned independent creator who got his start qualification Half-Life mods, it makes sensation; asset, his "secret desire as a back developer is [to] try to cod all the game genres," so helium had to wrap back some to shooters finally.

"I hardly reckon IT's really fun when you see developers do something that maybe they're non notable for. I sexual love it when developers exit outside the genre that you think they would probably act up future, or when a comedic histrion does a dramatic role, operating room vice versa."

Nothing to sneeze at

I told Chung to his virtual Surg meeting face that, having played several of his previous creations, I did not believe that Skin Deep would be any soft of "uncurving-up computer game." From the trailer alone, we know that it will prominently lineament Jean Claude Van Damme-inspired splits, inconveniently timed sneezes, and a mech that looks same Kirby with robo-legs and a hitman for a face (another recurring character, naturally). In other language, teaming up with Annapurna to help make this a much bigger production than previous Blendo projects does not imply sanding off the studio's idiosyncrasies. Oh, did I mention that it's being built on idTech 4, the selfsame engine that powered Doom 3 17 years ago?

"I felt that this game was a bit to a greater extent of a bigger setting than my previous stuff, and was more ambitious. And so I was looking for people to bring with, and Annapurna just felt like a in truth good fit for what I want to doh. If you look at their track record, and the kind of games that they woof, it's totally up my alley," says Chung, later citing Kentucky Path Zero as his personal favorite. "These are all games that I have it away, and are a great deal my vibe. And when I went and met with them they were just a super cool bunch of people. They were all people who had been in plot development, and were very well aware of what to expect and what things happen during making games. So it just mat up equivalent a really good conform to."

On top of having Annapurna's support happening the business end, the company's backing also means Chung is able to work with a overmuch larger team than atomic number 2 typically has in the past (contempt his reputation as a solo developer, "it's never a one-person show"). The Skin Inscrutable team includes Jacques Louis David Bequeath and Tynan Wales as designers, Laura Michet as writer, Eric Itomura as computer programmer, and Priscilla Snow As composer. "It's a really great crew of people, and it's really exciting to be capable to work in a small, cool creative crew, to bounce ideas dispatch of for each one other. It makes the game means better," says Chung.

Skin Walk-in has been in the works since roughly 2018, and information technology's currently headed to PC via Steam clean without a lay release date. We commode wear go for that this first-clock collaboration with an external publisher means console players may eventually know the unique delight of playing direct a Blendo product, but that's just wishful intellection on my split up for now – neither Chung nor Annapurna are set up to foretell any Sir Thomas More release inside information just yet.

I got a BA in news media from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from Cm Life, its student-political campaign newspaper. Long ahead that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to have me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've antecedently been a word medical intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a faculty writer here at GamesRadar.
